Here is Renae's Flat Color Pass for Page 7. Renae thought the page felt too flat and suggested I add some buildings to the backgrounds to help. I had originally gone without buildings because I wanted this page to feel more "emotional" and the backgrounds were to express the feelings of the characters... but it instead just made it feel flatter.

After Renae put the flat colors in, I went back in and added some buildings and changed a few things. I changed the expression lines in panel 1, to be more expressive. I also dropped a gradient behind them (in front of the buildings) to create more emotion.

For panel 5, I originally wanted yellow in the background, but I felt the color didn't feel right for the flat color pass. So I started to play around with other colors which would fit the emotional state the best. I ended up with a pink color and added a gradient of white-ish pink on top to knock back the buildings. I also tried a white-ish yellow on top of Renae's original yellow pass... I'm not sure which one I like better...

I'll post the highlight/shadow pass soon!

I went back and changed panel 4 since not only was the perspective off, but the staging didn't convey the sadness Psion is feeling. I went with a bird's eye shot to make Psion feel small and helpless.

Been working hard on Sequence 3, though the new stuff is pretty rough and its too soon to post. I created a map of the city to help me choreograph where the action is taking place and also to help me visualize the space better. I tend to get lost in my environments or they become too flat, so creating a map and thinking in 3D space has been helping.

I've also been reading up on camera moves in the book Shot by Shot, which has been helpful. I wish I would have taken a cinematography class while in school because I think knowing how real cameras move would really help strengthen my boards... So instead I've been faking it but taking a amateur camcorder out and shooting movements to simulating the perspective change that would happen during a pan... trying to simulate a crane shot like this is... a bit... more difficult. Oh well. I've asked Renae with help in creating a 3D model of the city I designed in Maya, so maybe I'll be able to key frame the camera that way to "see" how it would look. I'm starting to see the scene more clearly in my head, like I know what I want to happen... I just need to figure out how it would actually look through the camera lens to make the boards show what is in my head.

Oh... I also rewrote the second half of seq. 3 to make the action flow better. It was a little choppy having William getting shot at, telling the team to duck, then spending time with Dani and Ice and having a flirty moment with them, then going back to William talking to Peter... SO now William gets shot at, runs toward cover past Mirage and Shadow and they duck behind buildings. Meanwhile Dani and Ice are further away and havent' realized they are under attack... William calls out to them and as Dani turns asking, What? (cuz she didn't quite catch what William had said) they are shot at, Dani pushes Ice down, Ice creates a wall of ice which keeps the gunfire out. All seems good, when CRACK the gunfire shatters the ice wall, Dani grabs Ice and they run toward the rest of the team... overlapping William trying to patch into Peter at base. Also... I changed it so Peter and William can't really hear each other, there's too much static. Peter realizes the team is in danger, that they are being ambushed and since he can't communicate with them, he decides to take a jet to Earth to save them (mirroring the actions in his dream in seq. 1) meanwhile, Mirage realizes the city is an illusion and concentrating, she takes the illusion down... Here is where I want a cool crane move... like a crane/tracking shot... starting on Mirage and moving up and around the city showing the illusion melt away, revealing dozens of armed soldiers surrounding the team.

I wanted to make Peter move active and also to bring in a lot of the elements from his nightmare to heighten the tension...like, is the team in the dream THIS team? Will he get there in time? etc... Plus Peter is becoming the central character in the bigger story, so I need to make him more active... he was way too passive in the original draft, he basically just watches everything unfold and doesn't help the team in anyway... now he is at least trying to save them...

Working on sequence 3 (when the team lands and looks around the city) now... still in early stages... need to work out some of the sections more - esp. William's conversation with Peter, the team being attacked, and the big reveal at the end. I started playing around with some of the camera moves (Ice making the ice fort and Mirage taking down the illusion) but they still feel too flat... I might need to take reference footage to get it to feel right...
